Using Proxy Servers

Many organizations use a firewall (usually a router or a computer) to protect their internal network from external access. A proxy server is a program, typically running on a firewall machine, that can be configured to block external access, while permitting users behind a firewall to access Internet resources.

You can specify a different proxy server for HTTP, gopher, and FTP protocols.

To setup proxy servers:

From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
Choose the Proxies panel, if necessary.
For each Proxy field, type the domain name (or IP address) and port number of the proxy server you are using. See your Internet access provider or system administrator for details.
Choose the OK button.

To bypass proxy servers:

From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.

In the Bypass Proxy On field, specify the IP addresses, domain names, and ports that should be accessed directly without using a proxy server. Separate entries with commas. Examples:

Choose the OK button.
